Our Flight School

Springfield Flying Service (SFS) was established at Columbia Airport in California's Gold Rush country in 1991. Four years later, pilot Mike Cano purchased it. In 1995, Mike's friend and fellow aviator, Chris Miller, joined Springfield as Mike's partner.

Our instructors are composed of pilots with Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificates and Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) ratings and Multi-Engine Instructors.

All of our flight training personnel, regardless of their specialties, share a commitment to a philosophy of teaching based on the element of encouragement not intimidation to motivate each student to achieve his/her personal aviation goals.

Springfield philosophy:  ground school is concurrent with in-air flight training, home study, etc., three ingredients essential to successful attainment of a private pilot certificate or additional ratings. One-on-one instruction for all their students, progress at the individuals pace.

Springfield utilizes a state-of-the-art flight simulator in its ground training program. Our aircraft  include:  Three Cessna 172s; Two Cessna 150s, and a Stearman PT-17 . Click back to the Planes & Rates page for photos and rates. If you have your own plane SFS will be glad to instruct you.

Our track record: Many have received their Private Pilot Certificates, Instrument, Commercial and Instructors ratings with many of them going on to acquire advanced certificates and ratings qualifying them for cockpit assignments with commercial airlines, charter, air taxi and cargo companies.
